Notes from the Composer From Fred (at the 2016 Week of Handbells): “This piece was written for Dr. Larry Smith with his University of Southern Mississippi handbell ensemble “Carillon” in mind. “Nollirac” is “carillon” spelled backwards. The piece uses melodic and rhythmic motifs first heard backwards, then forwards. To make this work it is essential to feel/count/communicate the groupings in the 7/8 measures, either 2+2+3 or 3+2+2. Work at this slowly, thinking accented notes as forte and non-accented notes as piano. Measures such as 48 & 49 (2/4 + 3/8) are simply a 7/8 measure that has been split in two for easier readability.”
